We have witnessed a troubling rise in the boldness of police, government officials, and school administrations in initiating and supporting the arrests of students engaged in peaceful campus sit-ins and protests. In far too many cases, these arrests have been carried out with unnecessary force and violence, a shameful response to young people exercising their constitutional rights.

Historically, students have always stood on the frontlines of justice movements—not for personal gain, but to use their youthful voices, their privilege, and their innocence on behalf of those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and silenced. They see themselves as humanitarians, peacekeepers, and righteous advocates for a better society. When we, as a nation, respond to their calls for justice with police batons, handcuffs, suspension and expulsion, we are not only punishing their courage but also robbing them of their hopes and dreams of securing a free and democratic future for all.

The individuals who justify and carry out these actions—those who send police to break up peaceful demonstrations, those who approve of students being dragged away in cuffs simply for speaking truth—are hypocrites of the highest order. They claim to uphold democracy while stifling its very foundation. They claim to value education while crushing the spirit of the educated. In doing so, they risk sending our future leaders, educators, and innovators into the same cycle of oppression that has plagued this country’s marginalized communities for generations.

I see this as a profound moral failure—one that echoes the darkest moments in our history. As we send police after our nation’s youth for exercising their First Amendment rights in the same manner as sending hunting dogs after wild beasts. It is a display of fear, cowardice, and a desperate attempt to maintain an outdated system of control. AKA Modern Day Slavery!

My hope is that the American people will recognize this for what it is: a continuation of an old, broken mentality that has long sought to suppress those who dare to challenge injustice. We must break free from this pattern. We must do better. Our youth—our future—depends on it.

I stand against the dehumanization and enslaving of students!    What about you?
