Administrative Remedy Advocacy
The administrative remedy process, also known as grievance process, is the only official avenue for people incarcerated in the United States to raise an issue or seek relief for their conditions. Despite its critical importance, the process is underused, misunderstood, and it is often suppressed through misdirection, intimidation, and retaliation by staff. In addition, there are no outside organizations dedicated to helping people use this process or holding prison staff accountable to incarcerated people’s complaints.

At The Remedy Project, administrative remedies are the foundation of our work. Formerly incarcerated experts in the administrative remedy process train students to correspond with our incarcerated members and write remedies on their behalf. Administrative remedies legitimize and humanize the struggles that incarcerated individuals face, and combined with campaigns and base building, significantly increase the pressure on prisons to change their culture of corruption and abuse.
Campaigns
One of the main ways that prison staff get away with abusing their power is through their ongoing ability to control the narrative about what is going on inside of their facilities. The barbaric treatment of people in prison is kept out of sight and out of mind. Our campaigns amplify the demands our incarcerated members’ are making in their administrative remedies to take control of the narrative, bring the crisis in prison conditions to public attention, and put further pressure on prisons to meet the immediate needs of our members. We use storytelling and actions directed at strategic targets to make our members’ demands impossible to ignore.
Building Power
We are building a network of students, currently and formerly incarcerated people, and supporters to stand up against the ongoing crisis of torture and inhumanity in the US prison system. Led by our campus-based chapters, students recruit members and supporters, develop advocacy resources, spread knowledge about the carceral state, and disseminate strategy to create a movement of people strong enough and smart enough to challenge the prison system.

Testimonials

You guys really did a very good job by helping me out. You didn't help only me. I have two daughters, and I have two beautiful daughters and my beautiful wife, you helped my wife and you helped my two daughters and you helped me and you helped my families in Nigeria.”

“It means a whole new category of good that we don't expect to actually receive from people who are on the outside, because usually it's downplayed as to how serious those remedies actually are and what they could possibly do, like if they get into the hands of the right people. Being in a position where I don't have to continually be stressed out and worried about what I’m going to file, how to file, but knowing that you guys basically have our backs with that, I mean, it looks like a very good future that's coming… The students are just not only knowledgeable, but their fervor for this, their earnestness and wanting to see justice come back to somebody who's incarcerated… I just don't have words to describe how it makes me feel.”

“I just wanna let you and the students of the remedy project know, y'all did a great job for me, and my family. They love it and all the inmates, they love the way you have treated me through this project. And I just find myself sitting there thinking about how good a job you're doing and I will tell everyone else how good you are in your project with the students. They are very educated and they know exactly what to do, same as you.”

"Your organization helped me get needed dental care (prior to which I suffered as my teeth deteriorated for over 5 years). Thank you for for your help and having our backs when the world seems to be against us."
From: Kwan Winston

“I was deeply moved by the article you wrote highlighting the injustices I endured. Your eloquence, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to seeking justice have not only shed light on my personal plight but have also brought much needed attention to broader issues within our justice system. It is through voices like yours that change becomes possible… Your efforts have given me hope and renewed my faith in the possibility of justice being served. Knowing that there are individuals like you who are willing to stand up and speak out for what is right means more to me than words can adequately express.”

Y'all are an angel sent from heaven and you are my family."
